What my parrot does when I go out…

A crazy video I made in 1999. Recently won a contest with Cricket Cell Phones with it too for $5000! Shot with a security camera. Ignore the continuity errors!

Reason #3 why you should not get a parrot

Reason #3: Not only do they live a long time, but they consume a LOT of your time.

Parrots are very intelligent creatures, and like all intelligent creatures they require a lot of stimulation. Staring at the same wall for 60 years with nothing to do won't do anything for the bird. Keep in mind that these creatures are flock animals that live in large social groups in the wild and…

now that they are no longer in a flock of birds, you are the flock. Even though your bird may not have been trapped from the wild, they are fully programmed for life in a flock. You need to interact with your bird on a regular basis - for a significant amount of time each day. Can you dedicate this amount of time? Will you always be able to? If you ignore the bird they can develop lots of psychological problems, like feather picking or self-mutiliation or other obsessive habits. Will your bird still be a good pet once these problems occur?  Will you be able to deal with a half-naked bird with its purplish skin?

On the other hand, the more time you spend with your bird the better they can become - but also the more dependent they can become. It's very, very, very easy to set up conditioning that you are not aware that can lead to problems like screaming if the bird is left alone.

You need to give this intelligent being the time and respect it deserves? If you can't do that, don't get a parrot!

Guitar Playing Cockatoo!

Check out Sampson and his obsession with my guitar. Sampson playing the guitar was featured on an episode of Adam Curry’s Podfinder.

There is nothing that Sampson likes better than playing the guitar to the point where he can be lured off of anything simply by taking out the guitar.

It’s emptier than normal!

ParrotScience.com has selected (yet another) new back end engine. Something to give flexibility, security, and room for growth. I will be migrating the old articles over to this site soon. Articles and links are queued up to come in shortly!

Reason #2 why you should not get a parrot

Reason 2: They live a long time?

A long time. A Really
long time. 80 years for some of the big birds. By taking on a bird -
unless you get this bird at birth, chances are the bird will outlive
you. Who will take care of the bird when you are no longer able to?
Giving a long lived animal like this to another family member -
especially if the bird has a another 30 years left in it - is quite a
burden to others.

You may want to consider leaving some money in your will for the care of the bird. You may want to consider looking into options periodically in case something unexpected happens to you. What if you were to be killed on the highway? What if you were to get a serious illness? I acquired my bird because - according to the pet store - the owner became quite ill and could no longer care for the bird. Although we did tell the store they could contact us, we have not heard from anyone.

Keep in mind that buying a pet like this is a lifetime commitment - a lifetime! Although a parrot might seem like a good fit when you are young, consider what will happen if you meet and marry someone. Do they like birds? What happens when you have children? Parrots can be aggressive animals and young children might not know what to do around a bird. What if you like to travel. You might not be able to bring your parrot with you across international borders. I’ve been told that I would not be able to bring my cockatoo (whose parents were likely smuggled out of Australia) back to Australia.

Anyhow, thing of the time commitment involved. Will a bird fit in all stages of your life - or will the bird be moved from home to home as he ages.

This is where Episode 7 of our podcast comes in. Please listen to the work of the Gabriel Foundation.
